Despite the concerns of her brothers-in-law and the warnings given by her other neighbours – the homely, devout Terry and Pamela with their baleful cat providing some gentle comic relief – Freya, still blinded by bereavement, fails to realise that Mark’s compassionate facade masks a dangerous, manipulative intent. With masterly forensic care, Stevie Davies ratches up the tension until the very end of this superbly paced novel.
