The Party Wall

In this gripping psychological thriller, award-winning novelist Stevie Davies analyses the complexities of a troubled mind with extraordinary insight and sensitivity. While Freya’s husband lies dying in a south Wales town, their next-door neighbour, Mark, listens in to their every word and movement through the thin dividing wall. After the death, he plays to perfection the role of concerned neighbour, making himself indispensable and lulling the unsuspecting Freya, fragile in her new widowhood, into gratitude for his seemingly friendly and supportive presence. As he spins all too believable but imaginary tales of his life, carefully inching his way further into Freya’s life, the reader learns more about Mark’s obsessive personality and his dangerously abusive behaviour in past relationships. Despite the concerns of her brothers-in-law and the warnings given by her other neighbours – the homely, devout Terry and Pamela with their baleful cat providing some gentle comic relief – Freya, still blinded by bereavement, fails to realise that Mark’s compassionate facade masks a dangerous, manipulative intent. With masterly forensic care, Stevie Davies ratches up the tension until the very end of this superbly paced novel.

Reviews

  • 'This is a perfect novel for our post-lockdown times. Witty, grief-stricken and packed with intrigue, Stevie Davies's tale about a budding, dangerous relationship between neighbours is a beautifully wrought page-turner.'

    Francesca Rhydderch

  • '[The Party Wall] consolidates [Davies's] already rock-solid reputation as a superb novelist, who uses precise language to examine the world and its vagaries with all the skill, wisdom and dexterity of a heart surgeon slowly probing an aorta, testing the very pulse of life.'
