Un Nos Ola Leuad (One Moonlight Night) has been chosen as The Greatest Welsh Novel by a panel of literary experts and an online public poll of more than 1,400 readers of Wales Arts Review.

At the Wales Arts Review’s biennial Critics’ Roundtable held in association with Literature Wales at the Wales Millennium Centre on Saturday, November 1st, Mari Prichard, daughter of Caradog Prichard, received the award on behalf of her father from actress Sian Phillips.

Through the Schwob project, Wales Literature Exchange seeks to promote Un Nos Ola Leuad not just as The Greatest Welsh Novel but also as a modern European classic.

Schwob looks for modern classics, cult books, must-reads from all over Europe, which haven’t been widely translated and which are to most of us still an insider’s tip. Schwob pitches titles to publishers likely to be interested in purchasing translation rights and offers them information about funding. It also brings the published translations to the attention of readers - in cooperation with publishers, magazines, bookstores and libraries.

The project is a collaboration of literature foundations in Helsinki, Amsterdam, Brussels, Krakow, Barcelona, Paris and Wales Literature Exchange, and supported by the European Union.

Un Nos Ola Leuad was selected to the Schwob list in June. Wales Literature Exchange and the Polish Book Institute are currently working together to find a publisher for the Polish translation of the novel by Marta Klonowska, completed during a Schwob residency held in Tŷ Newydd in January.
