What better way to start the new year, than by welcoming five foreign authors and translators to Tŷ Newydd: National Writer’s Centre for Wales as part of Schwob, a project funded by the European Union.

Emilia Ivancu, Jaume Subirana, and Yuvan Chandrashekar will be translating poetry by R. S. Thomas into Romanian, Catalan and Tamil. Yuvan, a poet, novelist and translator from Chennai, will also be working on translations of poetry by Dylan Thomas, which are to be published by Kalachuvadu Press. Marta Klonowska will focus on translating Un Nos Ola Leuad (One Moonlight Night) by Caradog Pritchard into Polish, while Professor Wolfgang Schamoni will be translating works by Kate Roberts into German.

During the residency, held between January 7th- 21st 2014, the authors and translators will have the opportunity to discuss with experts and academics, visit places of significance to the works they have chosen to translate, and further their understanding of the literature scene in Wales.

Schwob was launched in the Netherlands in 2011 to facilitate the promotion of literature, not yet translated, from all parts of Europe. In 2013, the project received financial support through the EU Culture Programme allowing it to expand into an international network. Schwob now works in partnership with literature foundations in six other countries, including Wales, through Wales Literature Exchange, to promote “exceptional but hard to find or undiscovered modern classics that whet the appetite.”
