Aled Jones Williams grew up near Caernarfon in north Wales and he studied at Bangor University, Saint Michael's Theological College, Llandaf and Cardiff University. He is a prize-winning playwright, poet and writer. He was ordained to the Church in Wales in 1980.
His book, Rhaid i ti fyned y daith honno dy hun (You must walk that path alone), was shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year award in 2002 and he won the Crown at the National Eisteddfod in the same year. His winning poem, ‘Awelon’, has been included in Y Cylchoedd Perffaith (The Perfect Circles) (Gwasg y Bwthyn, 2010), his first collection of poetry, which deals with losing faith and alcoholism.
As a playwright, Jones-Williams has created acclaimed works for Welsh-language theatre, demonstrating his versatility across literary forms.
His drama Anweledig, which was inspired by medical records from a former mental health hospital in North Wales, toured with Frân Wen theatre company in 2019.
Three of his novels have been selected for our annual Bookshelf, Eneidiau (Souls) was selected to the Autumn 2013 Bookshelf and shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year award in 2014. Nostos was featured on the 2018 Bookshelf, and Y Wraig ar Lan yr Afon (The Woman on the River Bank) was on the 2021-22 list.
His latest publications have been three volumes of ultra-short stories, that began with in 2022 with Tynnu (Pulling) and continued with Raffl a Storïau Eraill (Raffle and Other Stories) which was shortlisted for Wales Book of the Year 2024 and in 2025 Colin yn y Bỳs Sdop (Colin in the Bus Stop). All are published by Gwasg Carreg Gwalch.
