Translation is at the heart of what we do - all our activity engages in translation. Our annual Bookshelf recommends recent books for translation, and our translations section showcases what has already been published in translation worldwide.
Wales is a multilingual country, and the Welsh language has a long literary tradition which is highly respected within her culture. We aim to ensure that literature written in the Welsh language has an opportunity to travel to other languages around the world.
This can happen directly or indirectly, through translation into English which reaches a wide readership and at the same time can serve as a bridge for translations into many other languages.
To develop literary translation from Welsh, we organise seminars and workshops and contribute to the short-term training of translators in Wales. We have launched a series of workshops focused on translation of poetry, prose and drama, as well as mentorships for authors who wish to translate or adapt their Welsh-language works into English.
Through our sister organisation Literature Across Frontiers, we are involved in programming the flagship annual event, the Literary Translation Centre at the London Book Fair, started in 2010, and we are building a network of literary translators who work in a Welsh context or who translate writing from Wales into other languages.
