Literary Translation Workshops at Galeri, Caernarfon, March 21st 2026

We are delighted to be holding four free literary translation workshops at Galeri Caernarfon on Saturday March 21st as part of our activities around our annual Cyfnewid Straeon event. Organised along with our sister organisation Literature Across Frontiers and with the support of Wales Arts International and Creative Wales we bring together authors, translators, publishers and academics to discuss and celebrate literature in translation from Wales and beyond.

Bringing the World to the Land of Poets: The Craft of Literary Translation into Welsh with Angharad Price

Saturday 21 March, 10:00am–12:00pm, Galeri, Caernarfon

An opportunity to join acclaimed author Angharad Price for an exciting two-hour workshop exploring the craft of literary translation into Welsh. Whether you're curious about translating literature or have already tried your hand at it, this session will welcome all levels of experience.

No preparation needed, just bring your enthusiasm. If you've translated something into Welsh from any language, you're welcome to bring it along to discuss. Through practical exercises translating from English, you'll have a go at the translator's craft while learning about the key principles and creative decisions that shape good translation, from capturing tone and rhythm to handling cultural nuances.

A chance to learn from a skilled and supportive author and literary translator, connect with others who share your interest, and deepen your appreciation for the subtle craft of translation. The workshop will be held through the medium of Welsh. All are welcome.

Translating the World's Poetry into English: A Workshop with Richard Gwyn

Saturday 21st March 10:00-12:00 Galeri, Caernarfon
Join award-winning poet and translator Richard Gwyn for an inspiring two-hour workshop exploring the art of translating poetry into English from other languages. Richard Gwyn is a Welsh writer and literary translator whose work spans poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. He is the editor of The Other Tiger, a celebrated anthology of Latin American poetry in translation, and his recent translation of Mexican poet Fabio Morábito's Invisible Dog (Carcanet, 2024) was awarded the 2025 Premio Valle-Inclán by the Society of Authors. The prize judges praised his translations for "beautifully recreating the poet's voice and vision" and making the poems "sing in English as sweetly as in the originals."

As Richard has written of his own practice, "It's simply a question of taking the original poem on its own terms and shaping it into something new in another tongue. You make a new poem, effectively, using the original as a guide."

During the two-hour workshop you will have a rare opportunity to learn from a translator of international standing, connect with others who share a passion for world literature, and deepen your appreciation of the subtle craft of carrying poetry from one language to another. All welcome.

An experimental and creative workshop with Esyllt Angharad Lewis

Saturday 21st March 12:30-13:30 Galeri, Caernarfon

Join artist and writer Esyllt Angharad Lewis for a short workshop exploring the possibilities that arise from being playful with Cymraeg. Esyllt is an artist and writer and she is the first author in residence at The Aberystwyth Arts Centre as part of the activities of Dinas Llên Aberystwyth Ceredigion part of the UNESCO Creative Cities network.

Translating Andrzej Bursa with Marta Listewnik

Join translator Marta Listewnik for a Polish–Welsh workshop which will focus on the poems of Andrzej Bursa (1932-1956), a Polish poet who wrote in the Stalinist era. Bursa's uncompromising poems lost none of their authenticity, dark humour and youthful energy over the decades and still appeal to people of all ages. When translating into Welsh, we will use English as a bridge language.
