Ned Thomas will be in converstaion with V Ramaswamy at the Morlan Centre, Aberystwyth, on Monday, 7 November 2016 at 7:30pm.
V Ramaswamy is a non-fiction writer and translator. As an activist working for the rights of the labouring poor in Kolkata, he has written about workers, squatters, slums, poverty, housing and resettlement, and has been at the forefront of efforts to envision and initiate the rebuilding of his city from the grassroots. Since 2005, he has been translating the short fiction of the Bengali writer Subimal Misra.
V Ramaswamy, is currently in Aberystwyth for three months as the Charles Wallace India Trust Creative Translation and Writing Literature Across Frontiers Fellow at Aberystwyth University. During his time in Aberystwyth he is working on the translation of a novel by the contemporary Bengali author Manoranjan Byapari into English and writing a long essay about his experience of translating the iconic anti-establishment voice of Bengal, Subimal Misra.
Ned Thomas is the President of the Mercator Institute. His memoir, Bydoedd (Y Lolfa, 2011) was recently published in Bangla by Sampark and translated by Sunandan Roy Chowdhury with the support of a translation grant by Wales Literature Exchange.
The evening, held at the Morlan Centre, Aberystwyth will provide an opportunity to explore India and Europe through literature, language and politics through the eyes and experiences of Ned Thomas and V Ramaswamy. The evening will begin at 7:30pm. Entry is free, a warm welcome to all.
