Launched in 2011, the scheme has already produced twelve mentorship ‘graduates’ in languages ranging from Catalan to Polish. Several of the 2011-12 mentees have had work published as a result of contacts made and skills honed during the mentoring process, and our Arabic mentee, Emily Danby, was commissioned to translate a novel, The Scent of Cinnamon by Samar Yazbek, during her mentorship.
The 2013 Mentoring Programme will be launched on 1 October 2012 with full details of the languages on offer and how to apply. Mentorships will be offered in 13 languages and run from 1 January – 30 June 2013.
Wales Literature Exchange and Translators' House Wales are working with the BCLT to create and support a Welsh->English mentorship for 2013. Details will be announced soon. The other languages covered will include: Arabic, Danish, Dutch, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Tamil and Welsh. Mentees in these languages will be selected by open application.
The BCLT/TA Mentoring Programme is supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Foyle Foundation and the Welsh mentorship by the Exchange and Translators' House Wales.
