Sut i Ddofi Corryn(How To Tame A Spider)

Overall Winner 2024 Wales Book of the Year

I feel for those who don’t believe in miracles, who dismiss them as mere fantasies. What’s the difference, anyway? To me, if the story exists, it’s true. And if someone believes something within the confines of a story, then why not believe it within the confines of life?

This is the story of Muriel and her heroic journey to seek recovery for her husband, Ken. They are a married couple in their forties when Ken finds out he is dying of cancer. But the true beginning of the journey is when the thirteen-year-old Muriel discovers an ancient book, The Mumbles Book of Spiders…

Written with a lightness of touch that teases the edges of reality, this short novel will take you on a unique adventure as Muriel seeks out her husband’s cure. But first she must face her own greatest worries and fears, and to do so, break free from the ties that keep her safe.

Reviews

“An intelligent and inventive book, which takes us from Port Talbot to Guatemala, from the depths of the jungle to the depths of marriage. Illness and recovery, reality and magic, spiders and music, fears and how to overcome them: all are interwoven in this fresh, easy and pleasurable read.”

Meg Elis, adjudicator of the National Eisteddfod Prose Medal 2023
