The Library Suicides

Twins Ana and Nan seek to avenge their mother’s death. They, along with the entire neighbourhood, know who should be held to account – the scathing literary critic, Eben. His words are thought to have driven Elena, a proud, distinguished novelist, to suicide. But proving that Eben has blood on his hands poses a challenge to the twins and gives pause to the reader, who inevitably asks: should a person, and the power of their words, be held responsible for the actions of another? Eben, a remarkably self-pitying and pitiful character, thinks not. Desperate to clear his name, he requests access to Elena’s diaries at the National Library where the twins work, but in a twist of fate, this quest for atonement threatens to bring about his downfall. The cunning twins seize control of the mighty building, imprisoning their colleagues, the public, and crucially, Eben. But with the aid of an unlikely ally, Dan, an ex-offender and disillusioned security guard, the plan is led awry. Amidst the ensuing chaos, shocking discoveries are made. The revelations uncovered in Elena’s diaries complicate the twins’ motives, and what began as an utterly resolute act of revenge blooms into a complex unravelling of loyalties. A captivating and thrilling narrative, The Library Suicides grapples with the question of identity and how people and words shape what and who we are.

Reviews

"An entrancing literary thriller; elegant and compelling. At the heart of a society that is spinning disturbingly off course, Dafydd's grand library guards the darkest of secrets. Step inside if you dare.”
