‘Welsh Noir at its best. Sparkling prose, complex characters, and an intimate plot that shimmers with honesty.'Philippa Holloway
‘as atmospheric and evocative as the scent of the salt marsh itself … quietly devastating.'Emma Darwin
This is a story of lost women — some who can be found again, and some who can't.
In a small estuary village on the Welsh coast, Catrin is mourning the anniversary of her mother's drowning when a teenage girl vanishes on the same mudflats. Terrified that history is repeating itself, and driven by a grief she has never resolved, Catrin becomes obsessed with finding Emily.
Her search dredges up dark revelations from the village's past and present and uncovers secrets about her own family that her parents never wanted her to find. The estuary does much of the work: tidal and secretive, a landscape that gives things up and takes them back again.
This is a first novel by an award-winning short-story writer. It won the Jericho Writers Festival of Writing Prize in 2020, was supported by a Literature Wales development grant, longlisted for the Bath and Mslexia Novel Awards and shortlisted for the Caledonia Novel Award. At its centre is a question any small community will recognise: the silence about the women they have lost.
