Behind The Sky

Winner of Wales Book of the Year 2021 in its original Welsh-language version, tu ôl i'r awyr.

Deian and Anest are eighteen, living in north-west Wales, and each is fighting something they cannot name to anyone. Their friendship forms the way the important things usually do — sideways and by accident, through school corridors, difficult families and the slow recognition that the other is carrying the same weight. Hunter writes about intrusive thoughts, trauma and the fragility of young adulthood without ever turning her characters into case studies, and the novel is far funnier than its subject suggests.

What made tu ôl i'r awyr a landmark was its language. Hunter wrote in the real Welsh of teenagers — dialect, code-switching, textspeak — and settled a long argument about whether a minoritised language could carry a wholly contemporary youth voice without apology. Every language with a threatened literary register faces the same problem, and few novels have solved it so completely.
